Now that President Barack Obama has assumed the chair of the presidency, we can all give a sigh of relief. At that moment on January 20, 2009, with the words, "So help me God," many prayers were answered as we witnessed the first African-American do assume the role of the leader of the free world. But the question now becomes, "how do you support the President when it conflicts with your Christian views?"
Because President Obama represents all the people of the United States, he ran his campaign on the premise of "inclusion," as well as following the platform of the democratic party. Consequently we've already witnessed his initial action as President with Executive Orders that reflect this premise. But especially for fundamental Christians, there comes a reckoning on how far do we support the President when his positions on gay rights, abortion, separation of state & church, stem cell research, etc. appear to conflict with the traditional teachings of the Church? In his role, regardless of his 'personal' views, would he not have to uphold the Constitution of the United States in representation for all America? It was noted that in his inaugural address, there was a first when he mentioned and recognized both "Muslims" and "non-believers." Just those words caused an uproar from many conservatives and Christian believers.
Now, it is no secret that I voted, supported and campaigned for President Obama; and as I've previously stated on several occasions, I feel his election was definitely orchestrated by God as a sign to the Church that we are in a "defining moment" in time! However, I can never compromise those spiritual tenets and foundational truths that I believe & know are right! But that does not mean I can't understand his presidential position of leadership for all Americans. We must remain vigilant and pray continually for the president. Let us consider the words of the scripture (from the Message version):
"Be a good citizen. All governments are under God. Insofar as there is peace and order, it's God's order. So live responsibly as a citizen." (Romans 13:1 - Msg)
"Pray especially for rulers and their governments to rule well so we can be quietly about our business of living simply, in humble contemplation." (1 Timothy 2:2)
